Hearth Place is DRAR’s 2017 Charity of Choice
DRAR was excited to join Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre at its 20th Anniversary celebration and announcement of its Building Hope for the Future campaign Sept. 29th.
Hearth Place, which provides a community of support for people affected by cancer, has a goal of $750,000 to assist in the expansion of the centre located at 86 Colborne Street West in Oshawa.
Andrea Shaw, Executive Director of Hearth Place, told guests about the vision of Carolyn Alexander, who, after being diagnosed with breast cancer wanted to create a centre that would address the social, practical, emotional, educational and spiritual needs of people dealing with all types of cancer and their family members and caregivers.
"She had a dream to create a legacy of hope for all families impacted by cancer," said Shaw. "A home where one can come and share their experiences with others, find resources and discover new ways to care for themselves throughout their journey with cancer.
“As with any dream, we tend to think of it as our baby, something to be cherished, nurtured and for us to help it grow strong, independent and healthy,” she continued. “They say it takes a village to raise a child and as I look around, oh what a magnificent village Hearth Place has been blessed with.”
Shaw noted that recent statistics from The Canadian Cancer Society reveal that one in two Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
“We are on the cusp of a tsunami of age-related health issues with an aging and growing population and we know that there will be an increasing need for our services over the next 10 years.”
That is why Hearth Place has embarked on a capital campaign, Building Hope for the Future, which DRAR is pleased to help support by sponsoring a room in the new wing of the 2,400 sq. ft. addition.
