Durham Deaf Services

Durham Deaf Services is a non-profit organization serving the deaf, deafened and the hard of hearing community. DDS was incorporated in 1982 and now 40 years later, remains an important part of the community.

DDS provides a program for Deaf Adults to improve their literacy skills as well provides much needed support in daily living and life skills. Prior to March 2020 DDS and CHS (Canadian Hearing Services) were the only two walk-in programs in our community that communicate in American Sign Language. Unfortunately, CHS has closed their doors and only offers online support. This has proven to be a huge barrier for many in our community.

Durham Deaf Services offers regular programing and literacy instruction, guidance, and support for children, youth, adults and seniors. We have a food bank program on Wednesdays that they can access. We work closely with local services such as housing, mental health etc. to assist Deaf individuals in accessing much needed community supports.

Due to the impact of social isolation and the limited exposure to ASL many have become withdrawn and having difficulty coping with some of the day-to-day new realities. In addition to community supports and literacy we have created a community hub for folks to come to DDS on a Tuesday and meet with members of the Deaf community to create projects and to socialize.

Sam Miron: Local REALTOR®'s ‘Ride with Heart' for Heart and Stroke Foundation

Sam Miron, a husband, father, grandfather and REALTOR® at Coldwell Banker R.M.R. Real Estate Brokerage rode his motorbike 4,900 kilometres from Vancouver to Cobourg and raised over $7,700 for a charity close to his heart – Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Why Heart and Stroke Foundation?

Last September, Sam lost his mother-in-law suddenly due to a heart attack. Just nine days later his mother also died from a heart-related issue. It is because of Heart & Stroke Research that his younger sister is living a normal life through a daily regime of medication; and one of his closest friends, who had a quadruple bypass at age 40 is enjoying his retirement years.

Every year heart disease affects 1.3 million Canadians and about one in 12 Canadian adults age 20 and over live with diagnosed heart disease. That's too many!

The genesis of "Ride with Heart" comes from combining one of Sam's favourite hobbies: motorbike riding with a personal desire to help with Heart and Stroke Foundation. Sam's journey had a bumpy start when he arrived in Vancouver. On June 10, 2021, he was expecting to collect his motorcycle instead he received a call from the driver of the truck to say the trailer hauling the bike had broken down somewhere in Northern Ontario.

Here's when Mike Brown, General Manager at Barnes Harley Davidson® came in the picture and arranged a Harley Davidson bike for him to kickstart his tour from B.C. Sam started off his journey by visiting the former Kamloops Indian Residential School and paid his respects to the burials of native children. He spent the rest of the day enjoying the scenery, wildlife and the beauty of Jasper city.

Sam describes his journey as nothing short of an ‘unforgettable' experience - from motorbiking through two different provinces and into a third for a new record of 711 kilometres. "I have seen some beautiful country and scenery on my adventure but I still like Ontario with the rock, hills and the lakes," said Sam Miron.

The ride through Alberta hit different – exposure to sun and the road was full of curves; lined with trees, trees and more trees. "It was the first time I'd ever seen a moose live. It was a lot bigger than I thought," stated Sam.

This journey ‘Ride with Heart' is an example of a variety of things: using a personal loss as a catalyst to bring change, battling societal issues and taking the time to reflect upon our Canadian values. We can all make a difference regardless of our experiences, not worrying about how and where because that's something Sam Miron, a local REALTOR®'s journey has taught us .

Lindsay Smith Awarded 2021 Community Spirit Award

The Community Spirit Award was created to recognize an exceptional community volunteer contribution from the past year of a member of the Durham Region Association of REALTORS® who may or may not necessarily be an active DRAR volunteer.

When the pandemic hit and restaurants were ordered to shut down for indoor seating, Lindsay Smith who comes from a family of chefs, knew he wanted to help. He created a Facebook group in mid-March to provide a free platform for restaurants to post their hours, services and safety protocols. He reached out to local restaurants to share the page and posted interviews with owners in the group so the community could get to know them. In two months, the group grew to over 3,000 members! By mid-October the group had grown to 10,000 members! Lindsay created a positive space for the community during a time when many business owners were struggling. Helping the community is nothing to new to Lindsay. Him and his business partner decided closing gifts weren't needed and instead of gifts, they donate to non-profit groups on their client's behalf. In 2020 they donated $18,000 on behalf of their clients to local charities.

Durham REALTORS® raise over $45,000 for local charities

DRAR raised more than $45,000 for local charities in Durham Region this year. DRAR's four Charities of Choice for 2020, and the very deserving recipients of this year's fund are: Dreams & Wishes Children's Charity; Luke's Place; Nanny Angel Network; and Shine Through the Rain.

"REALTORS® play meaningful roles in the communities they work and live. From donating money to a cause, volunteering at local charities in the community, or raising awareness for those in need, the generosity of realtors truly knows no bounds. This year once again our realtor Members raised funds and supported our Charities of Choice. During these unprecedented times, they need our support more than ever," said DRAR President Michael Watson.

DRAR held a Charity Golf Tournament this year and our proud to have raised over $8,000 for our Charities of Choice. $21,600 was raised by DRAR Members through the Ontario REALTORS Care® Foundation, Every REALTOR® Care's Campaign.

"During these times, local charities need our support. DRAR had to postpone the annual Charity Golf Tournament and were happy to be able to run a smaller tournament following health and safety guidelines," said President Michael Watson.

Earlier this year, our Charities of Choice received $5,400 through the 2020 Ontario Realtors Care Foundation Grant.

"Covid-19 has really affected our families that we worked with, our donor families as well those that are recipients of our programs. Our donor base has been significantly reduced this year and our fundraising efforts have been severely affected," said Denise Stahl President and Founder of Dreams & Wishes Children's Charity. "Abuse, domestic violence, homelessness, substance abuse, mental illness, have all increased. Any funds raised by DRAR will go directly to children and their mothers in shelters in Durham Region."

DRAR launched its first online auction on November 26th to December 1st with donations from local businesses the auction raised over $10,000.

"We are extremely grateful to everyone who supported our charitable events including our REALTORS Care® Week event on November 25th that included a donation of $1,000 of non-perishable food items and $5,000 for Feed the Need in Durham. This year would not have been a success without the unwavering support of our realtors in the community."

The Back Door Mission

The Back Door Mission for the Relief of Poverty provides supports to people in Durham Region who are dealing with homelessness, housing insecurity, mental health and addiction concerns, food access challenges and other indicators of societal marginalization.

This past year has been truly transformative for the Back Door Mission. We have grown from running a small-scale drop-in centre to operating a multi-service community hub called Mission United. In partnering with diverse social service agencies, we are now able to provide primary health care, mental health and social services, a daytime sleep area and peer supports to our patrons.

This has been a revolutionary approach in addressing urban poverty, and the results are showing in positive changes in so many lives.

Bereaved Families of Ontario

"BFO has saved my life" are the words we often hear. It means the healing has begun for a parent whose child has died. A parent whose agony began the very second they were notified by a Police Officer or Hospital. Bereaved Families of Ontario (BFO) - Durham Region, offers volunteer support for families devastated from a loss that is like no other. Many cannot even imagine their lives continuing. Our volunteers have all lost children, we too have long suffered and we are fully committed to giving back to our community.

BFO services are entirely free of charge and your donations allow us to operate in the absence of government funding. Ongoing support is without time limits and we welcome entire families in need, not just parents. As one of many examples, Karin New, a retired realtor, lost her son Ryan to a tragic motorcycle accident. Karin sought and received support from BFO and she is now a dedicated facilitator who would say "BFO-Durham saved my life". Should you or a loved one ever need our help and guidance, know that we are here.
