OSHAWA, Ont. - General Motors of Canada has announced 1000 new jobs expected to roll out in Oshawa. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne were on hand, along with a long list of government representatives, for the announcement as it was made Friday morning at GM Canada’s engineering centre in Oshawa, Ontario.
President Sandra O’Donohue of the Durham Region Associations of REALTORS® is thrilled to hear the new positions will be spread out amongst a number of General Motors research and development facilities in the Durham Region.
“Employment factors directly affect the housing market and the economy,” said O’Donohue. “This is great news for Durham Region residents as it supports homebuyer confidence through employment growth.“
“Brings us closer to our goal of setting up a clean economy,” said Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau. “Canada is a sound place to invest and we’re open for business.”
“It means great things for GM and Ontario,” said Ontario Premier, Kathleen Wynne. “GM chose Ontario, the place of a 21st century innovation system to compete with the Silicon Valleys of the world.”
“Employment growth is necessary for a healthy housing market,” said O’Donohue. “This confirms that Oshawa and the Durham Region are very important.”
700 or more jobs to be created in Ontario within the next five years, including new GM software centre out of Markham. This positive news is much needed after the unexpected loss of 1000 jobs at GM’s plant last year caused a great deal of worries surrounding the local economy.
