Recent polls indicate that this 2011 provincial election is sure to be a close one. All three major political parties in Ontario are looking for something that can help them win on Election Day.
REALTORS® believe that Ontario home owners can be the key to victory. On October 6, if you want to win on Election Day local candidates need to identify, convince and then get out the home owner vote.
But why target the home owner vote? The answer is threefold. First, home owners live in every riding in the province. Statistics Canada reports that there are over 3.2 million privately owned households in Ontario. These households make up a clear majority of the province’s 9 million registered voters.
Second, home owners are politically engaged. According to a recent Ipsos Reid survey, home owners are more likely to have volunteered, attended a political rally, donated to charity or written a letter to the editor. This means that the majority of people working on campaigns, donating to political parties and talking about issues in the media are Ontario home owners.
The last and most important reason is that home owners vote. The same Ipsos Reid survey found that 74 per cent of Ontario home owners say they voted in the last municipal election compared to just 48 per cent of renters. Provincial politicians can expect a similar trend on October 6 with a majority of MPPs being elected to Queen’s Park by Ontario home owners.
With that in mind, the message from REALTORS® to local candidates is clear: if you want to win on Election Day, get out the home owner vote. Speak to the issues that matter to them, issues like energy costs, home repairs/maintenance and their concerns about increasing taxes on home ownership. Home owners need to hear what solutions local candidates are offering to solve these very important issues.
Ontario REALTORS®, through our “Home Ownership Matters” campaign have presented three affordable solutions to some of the major issues facing Ontario home owners today. We encourage local residents and candidates to visit www.HomeOwnershipMatters.ca to learn more.
Local REALTORS® also encourage everyone to head to the polls on Election Day to cast their ballot. If you are unsure about how or where to vote visit www.elections.on.ca
