DURHAM REGION – Due to the devastating flooding caused by heavy rains, a state of emergency has been declared in communities across Southern Alberta. Lives have been lost and tens of thousands of people in Calgary and the surrounding areas remain out of their homes.
The Durham Region Association of REALTORS® (DRAR) has donated $5,000 to help these communities in need. "When terrible events occur, you often see a community pull together, and even though this isn't happening in our backyard, we feel compelled to help. In fact, the Canadian REALTOR® community as a whole has shown tremendous support for the victims of this terrible flood," expressed Ian Smith, President of the Durham Region Association of REALTORS®.
As the people of southern Alberta are allowed to return to their homes, they will be faced with the enormous challenge of starting to rebuild their homes and lives. "It's expected that with the amount of damage caused by this flooding it could take up to 10 years to fully recover . Here in Durham Region it's hard to imagine what that would be like, but we know we want to be part of the solution and assist the people of Alberta as much as we can," added President Smith.
The Canadian REALTORS Care® Foundation has provided a secure place where REALTORS® and other members of the community can donate online. Simply visit REALTORScare.ca to make a donation. All money raised will be provided to Alberta's local relief fund efforts.
